Jerry Lewis to leave MDA Hosting Duties
Posted 5/16/2011

TUCSON, Ariz., May 16, 2011 - One of the world's greatest humanitarians of all time, Jerry Lewis has announced he's retiring as host of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon.  "As a labor of love, I've hosted the annual Telethon since 1966, and I'll be making my final appearance on the show this year by performing my signature song, 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.  I'll continue to serve MDA as its National Chairman – as I've done since the early 1950's.  I'll never desert MDA and my kids."

Having banked some 900 hours of live television time encouraging America to help fuel worldwide research seeking treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases, while simultaneously enabling MDA to provide unparalleled medical and health care services through its national network of some 200 hospital-affiliated clinics, Lewis today confirmed,  "It's time for an all new Telethon era. This year's six hour prime-time Telethon on September 4 will be spectacular, and I'm thrilled to be part of it.  We're so close to treatments that it's absolutely vital for everyone to tune in and make a generous donation.  America has always found a way each year to give me that just one dollar more to help my kids."

MDA President & CEO Gerald C. Weinberg said, "As MDA continues the growth Jerry Lewis has done so much to inspire, all of us who've been privileged to work beside him, and the hundreds of thousands throughout the world affected by the myriad of muscle diseases MDA battles, will acknowledge in our hearts forever the unrivaled role Jerry has played in our lives and the lives of all Americans.  We're deeply honored that Jerry Lewis will continue as MDA's National Chairman and we're profoundly grateful for everything he has done and is doing for the Association."

Jerry Lewis

Friday 24th June

Get up close and personal with legendary comedian, Jerry Lewis, as he performs on Friday 24th June in an Australia fundraising tour for muscular dystrophy.

At 85 years of age, Lewis isn’t showing any sign of slowing down in what has been, and continues to be, a hugely successful career. Lewis will share stories of his life and tales of friendships with John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe as well as other anecdotes. Considered an ‘idol’ by Jim Carrey and described as ‘The Maestro’ by Robin Williams, Jerry Lewis fans will remember fondly his lip syncing ‘Record Acts’ early in his career.

As a young stand-up comic, Lewis was launched into the spotlight when he teamed up with Dean Martin in the famed comedy duo ‘Martin and Lewis’ which spanned a 16-year partnership in the mid 1940s and 1950s. After splitting with Martin, he continued on with a successful solo career that spanned stand-up comedy, acting, writing, directing and producing. The talented Lewis often juggled multiple roles such as writer and actor in hit films like “The Nutty Professor” (1963) and “The Ladies’ Man” (1961).

In 1977 Jerry Lewis was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his fundraising efforts for muscular dystrophy. As the international patron of Muscular Dystrophy Foundation (MDF) Australia, Jerry will tour locally in support of the Foundation, driving awareness and raising funds.

Guests attending Jerry’s Rooty Hill RSL show on June 24 in the Tivoli Showroom will be entertained by his stories, watch his film excerpts and see snippets of his unforgettable comedy routines.

Rooty Hill RSL CEO Richard Errington says the organisation is thrilled to host Jerry Lewis at Australia’s largest RSL club as part of his brief Australian tour.

“Jerry is an incredibly well known entertainer and comedian and we have no doubt he will receive an extremely warm welcome from visitors to Rooty Hill RSL on June 24,” Errington said.

“Jerry will be a popular drawcard for hundreds of Sydneysiders who get to experience him up close and personal at Western Sydney’s premier entertainment venue, Rooty Hill RSL.”

JERRY LEWIS SAD LAST DAYS

Published on: June 2, 2011

After being booted from his annual Labor Day telethon pals fear comic legend Jerry Lewis is nearing the end.

AT the age of 85 and in failing health, getting booted as host of his beloved TV telethon could be the final straw for Jerry Lewis, fear pals.

The comic is said to be devastated at being officially axed from the role fronting the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual Labor Day fundraiser – a position he’s held for 45 years.

“Jerry’s being allowed on camera to sing his trademark song You’ll Never Walk Alone, but that’s it,” a friend says. “It’s the end for him. “It’s very sad. He’s shattered. In recent years, the Telethon has been his life.”

Lewis’s health is a major issue, say sources.

The "Nutty Professor" has suffered two heart attacks, prostate cancer and diabetes and has crippling back pain that forced doctors to insert a neurostimulator around his spine to ease his discomfort.

He also has dealt with pulmonary fibrosis, and treating it left him so bloated that for a time he was barely recognizable.

He finally became dependent on the medication, prednisone, and went into rehab

But until now, he never gave up hope.

“Jerry still talks about making movies, doing Broadway and even performing comedy dates. But with his age and health problems, it isn’t happening. His wife Sam wishes he would just accept retirement at this point, but I think to Jerry, that's a death sentence. We're afraid Jerry's facing his last days,” another pal said.
